Christa Moreau is a French writer, photographer, and mother of two young children. After studying at ISIPCA, a prestigious perfumery school in France, she spent a decade working for top beauty and fragrance brands in Paris, London, Berlin, and Singapore before settling in Dubai. As a professional in the perfumery industry and documentary photographer, Moreau wanted to bring her experience into a children’s story, to offer something unique.

Designed for three- to eight-year-olds, The Perfume of Roses follows Mounia, a kind-hearted Moroccan girl, as she nurtures a friendship with a young visitor who is visually impaired. It introduces children to the fragrant world of the Moroccan Damask rose, a cherished ingredient in perfumery, inviting them to discover the magic of scent through storytelling.

What’s the inspiration for your book?

I have travelled extensively for years documenting the world’s finest fragrant raw materials, and I felt that the stories of the landscapes and local communities I encountered should be shared with a wider audience. The Perfume of Roses was directly inspired by one of those journeys—a trip to Morocco’s Valley of Roses during the harvest season. I was captivated by the scent of fresh roses in the air, the vibrant colours of the landscape, and the warmth of the local community.

What are the main themes in the book?

My goal was to create an immersive, sensory journey rarely explored in children’s literature. The Perfume of Roses focuses on olfaction—our sense of smell—as a central narrative. Beyond the sensory experience, the book is also a celebration of culture and diversity. It vividly portrays life in Morocco, highlighting its traditions, landscapes, and community, all through the eyes of a child.

What is the significance of the setting?

The setting is not just a backdrop; it plays a central role in the story. The valley represents a connection to nature, tradition, and community. The sensory richness—the smell of fresh roses, the sound of Berber songs, and the sight of women harvesting petals—immerses the reader in Mounia’s world and highlights the beauty of this unique cultural heritage. Through this setting, I hope to inspire children to discover this beautiful region of Morocco one day and realise how precious and diverse our planet is.

How do the illustrations enhance your storytelling?

The illustrations were created by the talented Sally Walker, and I feel so lucky to have worked with her. She used my own photographs from the Valley of Roses as a key reference, which helped ensure the details felt true to the place. One of my favourite things is how beautifully she captured the colour palette of the valley. But what I admire most is her work with light. Sally managed to convey the magic of each time of day—from the gentle morning light to the golden glow of the late afternoon—adding warmth and atmosphere to every scene.

What messages do you hope children take away from your book?

The book incorporates several important messages. The setting in Morocco and its rich culture, rarely highlighted in children’s literature, offers readers a unique, diverse perspective, helping children understand and appreciate cultural differences from an early age. The story also provides an opportunity to learn about roses and their cultivation, promoting a greater appreciation for the environment.

What can readers expect from your future books?

Each new book will take readers on a fresh adventure to a different country, with a local child as the narrator and a special focus on a unique natural ingredient. The stories will blend sensory discovery with cultural exploration, giving children a chance to travel the world through words and illustrations.
